Mahatma Gandhi's statue unveiled

VGP – A bust of India's most famous independence campaigner, Mahatma Gandhi, has been unveiled at the Indian Embassy in Ha Noi on August 27 as this year Indian people are celebrating the 150th anniversary of his birth.

The ceremony was part of activities organised during the visit of Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj.

The event was held on the occasion of the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhiji, contributing to enhancing the Indian cultural footprint in Viet Nam.

Speaking at the ceremony, India’s External Affairs Minister H.E. Smt. Sushma Swaraj highlighted the long standing traditional friendship between Viet Nam and India. “India and Viet Nam’s relations are not only the relations established after India’s independence, these relations are centuries old and are cultural, historical and also commercial”, she said.

According to Indian Ambassador to Viet Nam, Parvathaneni Harish, the bilateral trade between the two countries has increased from US$7.8 billion in 2015-2016 to US$12.8 billion in 2017-2018, an increase of 66%. The last few years have seen significant strengthening in the defence and security cooperation and it is an important pillar of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

In addition, an archaeological survey of India is actively contributing to the conservation and preservation of our joint cultural heritage at the world heritage site of My Son, he added.

On the same day, she donated artificial limb fitments of Jaipur Foot to Vietnamese beneficiaries in the northern province of Phu Tho. She also witnessed the MOU signing ceremony between the International Centre for Cultural Studies (ICCS) and My Son Sanctuary Management Board.
