VGP – Hà Nội is planning a project to convert itself into Việt Nam’s first city without cigarette smoke in the run-up to the celebration of its 1000th anniversary.

Hà Nội will become a capital city without cigarette smoke

Since April, Hà Nội has been cooperating with the World Health Organization (WHO) to launch campaigns for no-smoking at all working offices and public places.

According to Vice Mayor Ngô Thị Thanh Hằng, the city will conduct supervision over the implementation of campaigns since June.

Banners and slogans are displayed along some main streets to warn people about serious consequences of cigarette. Voluntary parades for anti-smoking will also be organized.

Young people are especially encouraged to say “no” to smoking. The City also launched an anti-smoking movement in schools and universities.

In late May, thousands of students from over ten Hà Nội-based universities held bicycle parades to show their support to the movement.

Dr. Jean-Marc Olivé, representative of WHO in Việt Nam, said that the success of the project is meaningful to the celebration of the capital city’s millennium in 2010.
