VGP - A majority of schools in Ha Noi switched to online learning on October 7 for fears of heavy rainfall, floods and thunderstorms after typhoon Matmo, the 11th of this kind hit Viet Nam.

The Ha Noi's Department of Education and Training directed all schools and local authorities to take urgent measures to ensure student safety. In an official dispatch issued last Friday evening, the department urged schools to closely monitor weather updates and storm warnings, while actively preparing response plans to minimize risks.

School principles were told to adjust teaching schedules flexibly, suspend outdoor and extracurricular activities, especially in flood- or landslide-prone areas, and maintain constant communication with parents to ensure student supervision during the storm.

Heavy rains have been reported across Ha Noi due to impact of Storm Matmo.

Rainfall over the past six hours has reached 40–80mm, even 91mm as recorded at the Thuong Cat monitoring station and 116mm at the Soc Son station, said the National Centre for Hydrometeorological Forecasting. Between 6am and 11am on October 7, downpour and gale are predicted to persist across Ha Noi, with rainfall reaching 40–70mm or even more than 100mm in certain places.

Rain will ease quickly from the day's late afternoon, the centre noted, warning a high risk of flooding for low-lying streets in inner areas./.
