VGP - The local authorities of Ha Noi announced an ambitious plan to turn the Hoan Kiem Lake shoreline into Van Hien (Civilization) Avenue—a new cultural and historical axis that will blend tradition with modernity, creating a lively public space for residents and visitors alike.

The project, spearheaded by Hoan Kiem Ward and implemented in phases, centers around the renovation of Dong Kinh Nghia Thuc Square and surrounding areas. Dinh Tien Hoang Street, which runs along the lake's eastern edge, will be redesigned into a boulevard showcasing Vietnam's cultural identity while enhancing tourism appeal.

Two-phase transformation

In the first phase, the "Shark Jaw" building at No. 1–3 Dinh Tien Hoang Street was demolished. Its facade has since been fitted with LED screens and decorated with national flags and flowers to mark Vietnam's 80th National Day (September 2).

Planned works include: (1) removal of the median strip along Dinh Tien Hoang Street; (2) preservation of the existing tree system; (3) new traffic flow adjustments to ease congestion; (4) paving of the square with concrete, creating a flat open space sloping gently toward the lakeside; (5) placement of mobile flowerpots to ensure flexibility for weekend pedestrian zones; (6) a central feature will be the establishment of a cultural-historical axis stretching from the Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre to the current fountain area.

The second phase will emphasize landscape design and infrastructure improvements. This includes the installation of lighting towers, development of underground facilities, reconstruction of building facades, and comprehensive paving of the square, all under the direction of the Ha Noi People's Committee. Thuy Ta Restaurant, a landmark on the lake, has also been renovated, with unsightly additions removed to harmonize with the new design.

Expanding public and green spaces

Alongside the lakeside renovation, Hoan Kiem Ward plans to transform the area east of the lake into a cultural park. Stretching from Tran Nguyen Han Street to the Department of Culture and Sports headquarters on Hang Dau Street, the park will lie near iconic sites including Ngoc Son Temple and the Monument of Courage, offering residents and tourists more open, communal spaces.

Architect Dao Ngoc Nghiem, former Vice Chairman of the Viet Nam Urban Planning and Development Association, noted that the idea of redesigning the Hoan Kiem Lake area dates back to 1995. He stressed the importance of expanding public and open spaces around the lake's eastern side.

Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Quang Lieu, Principal of the High School for Social Sciences and Humanities at Vietnam National University–Ha Noi, shared the view that the area has long struggled with overcrowding.

"After decades of development, Ha Noi has become crowded and lacks communal spaces. The city needs solutions so that both residents and tourists can fully engage with and enjoy our culture," Lieu said.

He praised the project, adding: "The Ha Noi People's Committee will use the current situation as a basis to create a cultural space, a new look for Hoan Kiem Lake, to improve the quality of life for its people. This is a correct and groundbreaking decision by Ha Noi—a pioneering step to realize the Party's cultural policy that 'Culture lights the way for the nation.'"

Cultural landmark for modern capital

This transformation aligns with Ha Noi's broader commitment to building a friendly, attractive, and culturally rich city. As a UNESCO Creative City and holder of the "City for Peace" title, the capital seeks to strengthen its identity while offering new public spaces that reflect both heritage and innovation.

The renovation of Hoan Kiem Lake's eastern shoreline into Van Hien Avenue represents not just an architectural project but a cultural milestone—where history, modern life, and future aspirations converge in the heart of the capital.
