Ha Noi deploys 36 electronic traffic message boards providing real-time traffic updates

The VMS network will display real-time updates on traffic congestion, accidents, localized flooding, traffic diversion plans, alternative routes, and other important alerts, enabling motorists to make informed travel decisions while enhancing traffic management and road safety.

The system is part of Phase 2 of the project to upgrade the Traffic Command and Information Center and install a citywide camera surveillance and traffic management system for maintaining public security and handling traffic violations, implemented by the Ha Noi Police.

According to the Ha Noi Police, Phase 2 has been developed as part of a broader vision to establish a modern, integrated intelligent transportation system featuring an open architecture and utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) and Big Data technologies. The project supports urban management in the new development phase and aligns with the objectives of the Politburo's Resolution No. 57-NQ/TW on promoting science and technology, innovation, and digital transformation.

To implement the project, the Ha Noi Police signed the construction contract with contractors on March 31, 2026, followed by contracts for equipment and software supply on April 16, 2026. Despite the project's tight 120-day implementation schedule, extensive workload, and citywide scope, the key components have now been substantially completed, meeting quality standards, technical requirements, and the planned timeline.

As part of the project, authorities have installed 2,460 AI-powered cameras, including: 1,107 cameras for detecting traffic violations; 960 cameras for traffic volume monitoring; 112 panoramic cameras covering major intersections; 251 PTZ (pan-tilt-zoom) cameras serving public security surveillance; and 30 speed enforcement cameras.

The project has also completed the installation and configuration of 57 servers, 36 VMS electronic traffic message boards, 100 intelligent traffic signal control cabinets, 930 camera poles, 475 kilometers of fiber-optic cable, and 136 kilometers of power cable. The system has been deployed at 238 key intersections, major gateway routes, and urban areas throughout the capital.

According to the Ha Noi Police, once operational, the VMS system will display real-time information on traffic congestion, accidents, localized flooding, traffic diversions, alternative routes, and other essential warnings. By delivering traffic information directly to motorists on the road, the system enables drivers to proactively select the most suitable routes, reduce travel time, and support authorities in managing traffic more effectively.

In addition to the electronic message boards, Phase 2 introduces several advanced technological features. The system is capable of adaptive traffic signal control based on traffic volume, creating "green waves" along selected traffic corridors, predicting congestion risks using AI, and providing real-time traffic alerts.

The project's application scope has also been expanded beyond traffic management to support public security and urban governance. The AI-powered system can detect incidents such as physical altercations, unauthorized entry into restricted areas, weapon-related activities, fires, smoke, illegal waste dumping, and various other situations, providing valuable support for police command and operational management.

The Ha Noi Police added that the project is gradually establishing a comprehensive big data platform to support command and control operations. It includes the development of a centralized traffic database and enhanced connectivity with sector-specific management systems, laying the foundation for progressively automating traffic violation processing and building Ha Noi's intelligent transportation ecosystem.

The completion of Phase 2 marks another significant milestone in modernizing Ha Noi's traffic management and public security operations.

It also represents a concrete step toward implementing the objectives of the Politburo's Resolution No. 57-NQ/TW on advancing science and technology, innovation, and national digital transformation, contributing to the development of a digital government, smart city, and modern digital infrastructure that better serves citizens and businesses./.
