The second phase was completed in just under 90 days, with key components integrated, tested and ready for operation, according to a conference held by the municipal Department of Public Security on June 29.

The new system includes 1,107 cameras for detecting traffic violations, 960 for monitoring traffic flow, 112 for intersection surveillance, 251 pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) cameras and 30 speed enforcement cameras. A total of 930 camera poles have been installed at 238 major intersections, city gateways and urban areas across the capital.

With this latest rollout, the total number of AI-enabled surveillance cameras operating across Hanoi has risen to nearly 5,000.

Compared with the first phase, the upgraded system incorporates several advanced technologies, including AI-powered traffic congestion forecasting, adaptive traffic signal control and real-time traffic information displayed on variable message signs. It also broadens surveillance beyond traffic management to detect violations related to urban order and environmental protection.

The system can identify incidents such as fights, unauthorized entry into restricted areas, the use of weapons, fires, smoke and illegal waste dumping, providing enhanced support for maintaining public security and urban order.

Speaking at the conference, Lieutenant General Nguyen Thanh Tung, Director of the Ha Noi Department of Public Security, stressed that the focus should be on ensuring the system operates efficiently rather than simply completing its installation.

He instructed relevant units to finalize acceptance procedures, establish operating regulations and fully utilize the system's capabilities, particularly AI-assisted traffic management and automated violation detection.

Tung also called for wider application of AI, big data analytics and deeper integration with specialized databases to strengthen the city's digital governance and smart urban management.

The first phase of the project was launched on December 13, 2025, when Ha Noi police installed 1,837 surveillance cameras on 25 roads and at 195 key intersections across the city./.
