Three strategies for an industrialized and modernized Hà Nội

VGP – Hà Nội should target an annual gross domestic product (GDP) growth rate of 9-10% from 2011 to 2020 and 7.5-8.5% in the 2021-2030 period while ensuring average GDP per capita of US $5,100-5,300 in 2020 and US $11,000 -12,000 in 2030, according to the municipal socio-economic development plans discussed by the City’s Party officials on April 7.

During its 19th session, the 14th Party Committee of Hà Nội focuses discussions on three documents: the Municipal Socio-economic Development Strategy to 2030 (with visions to 2050); the Overall Planning Scheme for the construction fo the capital city to 2030 (with visions to 2050); and the Master Plan on Socio-economic Development to 2020 (with visions to 2030).

Accordingly, by 2030, over 98% of the city’s economy will mainly be built up by services and industries; more than 85% of its workforce are trained laborers.

Meanwhile, the urbanization rate will stand at 67-70%, and the city’s population will reach 9-9.4 million, including 6.4 million urban residents.

Mr. Phạm Quang Nghị, Secretary of the Hà Nội Party Committee, said that the capital’s development strategies should be feasible and effectively put into play all the characteristics and potentials of the city as well as put forth specific steps suitable for each development stage.

A draft Socio-economic Development Strategy for Hà Nội towards 2030 sketches out five key functions of the capital: A national political and administrative center, a main cultural center,, a leading scientific, educational and training center, a key economic center of the country, and an international transaction and communication hub.

Hà Nội’s new spatial structure will consist a nuclear urban area and five satellites, namely Sơn Tây, Hòa Lạc, Xuân Mai, Phú Xuyên-Phú Minh and Sóc Sơn.
