On the morning of October 10th, 1954, the last French soldiers walked on Long Bien bridge to withdraw from Ha Noi and Vietnamese soldiers took over the city. Overwhelmed with flags and extreme joy, thousands of capital residents happily welcomed the troops returning after gaining victory over French.

In this period, Ha Noi faced numerous difficulties after the long struggle for liberation. The city strived to build socialism, while still managed to support the war in the South of Viet Nam. Linebacker II, also known as Dien Bien Phu in the Air battle victory in Ha Noi, is the significant victory of Viet Nam over the United States, which made the US sign Paris Peace Accords of 1973, ended its military involvement in Viet Nam and created a strategic move to country reunification in 1975.

After 1975, Ha Noi had to confront directly severe consequences of the war, embargoes and socio-economic crisis. Great efforts were made by the Government and people, contributing to helping the city overcome these difficulties.

Over the past 60 years, Ha Noi has gained significant achivements. Currently, as the political and administrative center of country, Ha Noi reached annual average growth of 9.5% which is 1.5 times higher than country’s average; city’s GDP accounted for 10%, while its budget collection made up 20% of the country’s total amounts.

So far, the city has relations with over 100 cities and capitals all over the world, and participated in many important international forums. In 1999, Ha Noi was the only city in Asia Pacific recognized as the “City for Peace” by UNESCO.

For these contribution and excellent performance over the past years, Ha Noi was awarded Ho Chi Minh Medal on the occasion of Liberation Day October 10. This is valuable reward and motivation for Ha Noi’s Party and people to continue their efforts for further development of the city, said Party Committee Secretary Pham Quang Nghi at the meeting.
