Poverty rate drops significantly after four years

VGP – In the 2016-2020 period, the poverty rate in Ha Noi fell from 3.64% in early 2016 to only 0.42% in the same period in 2020. The city fulfilled the poverty reduction goal two years ahead of schedule. So far, the city housed 8,754 poor households.

Urban poverty rate was only 0.06%. Eight districts recorded no poor households including Cau Giay, Ba Dinh, Thanh Xuan, Tay Ho, Hoan Kiem, Nam Tu Liem, Ha Dong, and Hai Ba Trung. Especially, there were no poor and near-poor households at Hai Ba Trung district. 

Meanwhile, rural poverty rate was decreased to only 0.69%. Two districts were free from poverty including Dong Anh and Gia Lam districts. Eight districts and communes had less than 1% poverty rate namely Son Tay towner, Da Phuong, Hoai Duc, Me Linh, Phu Xuyen, Quoc Oai, Thach That, Thanh Tri districts. 

In eight districts, poverty rate fluctuated from over 1% and under 2% such as Ba Vi, Chuong My, My Duc, Phuc Tho, Soc Son, Thanh Oai, Thuong Tin, and Ung Hoa. 

As of late 2019, the city allocated over VND 8.5 trillion to implement poverty reduction program. Poor households, nearly poor households, and those recently escaping from poverty accessed VND 2.5 trillion preferential credit at the Ha Noi Bank for Social Policies on job generation, business and production, service, housing building, and new rural areas. 

The local authorities also put aside VND 683.1 billion to buy healthcare insurance for the poor; VND 4 trillion on monthly social subsidies; nearly VND 98 billion on power subsidies; over VND 33 billion on education fee reduction for poor pupils and students; over VND 15 billion for the elderly. 

In addition, 7,165 poor households got local budget and social donations to build and repair houses./.
