The campaign launched for World No Tobacco Day by the WHO and its partners this year aims to demonstrate the threats that the tobacco industry poses to the sustainable development of all countries, including the health and economic well-being of their citizens.

Deputy Minister of Health Nguyen Viet Tien cited the fact that 96.8% of lung cancer patients in Viet Nam smoke.

Non-communicable diseases contribute to 73% of all deaths nationwide, he said, adding that tobacco use is one of the major causes.

Smoking bans have been instituted in 1,560 State administrative agencies, 10,000 schools, 4,442 factories, and 508 hospitals.

Nearly 70% of trade unions at the grassroots level say no to smoking in the working environment, while 195,000 workers gave up smoking.

According to the WHO, the WNTD campaign has the objectives such as to highlight the links between the use of tobacco products, tobacco control and sustainable development, and to encourage countries to include tobacco control in their national responses to 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda./.
