VGP – Viet Nam’s industrial production index (IPI) in May increased by 5.9 percent against the same period last year, the General Statistics Office (GSO) has reported.

The latest data show that output in the January-May period, industrial output saw a year-on-year increase of 5.6 percent.

The processing and manufacturing sector rose by 7.5 percent year on year while mining activity was down 2.1 percent, extending its slump from the previous month.

Increased productivity in manufacturing was mainly driven by growth in textiles, motor vehicles, leather products, and electronic devices and components.

Utility services, including power generation and water supply, saw respective rises of 10.6 percent and 6.1 percent during the January–May period.

In the two biggest cities Ho Chi Minh City and Ha Noi, industrial growth rates were much lower, at 5.2 percent and 3.8 percent respectively.
