At a meeting to review local programs supporting the poverty reduction held on August 20, director of the Ha Noi Department of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs Khuat Van Thanh said under the National Target Program on Sustainable Poverty Reduction, the capital city has supported house reparation and construction for more than 4,000 poor households, at a cost of more than VND420 billion (US$18.06 million).

The capital city's poverty rate was 5.72% in 2008 and fell to 1.16% in the period of 2016-2018, with 52,000 poor households having escaped poverty, thus the goal of reducing poverty was fulfilled two years ahead of the plan, he added.

Chairman of the Ha Noi People’s Committee Nguyen Duc Chung said the implementation of social security and welfare policies to care for disadvantaged people and low-income families is an important task in the city’s socio-economic development strategy.

To promote poverty elimination, Chung requested localities to apply the models of poverty reduction effectively in accordance with the local particularity and the needs of each poor household, as well as integrate them into the new-style rural construction program.

In 2018, it completed the housing support program for poor families, with 4,166 households assisted to build or repair houses, turning Ha Noi into the first locality nationwide to have no households facing housing difficulties./.
