Mr. Chung made the announcement on August 16 in response to questions of the National Assembly Standing Committee’s deputies on pressing flood situation in Ha Noi.

Chairman Chung said that the local authorities acknowledged the problem and set forth numerous solutions to deal with it.

Mr. Chung reported that since 2002, two Japan-funded projects on sewage treatment have been implemented. The first phase was fundamentally concluded. However, former areas of Ha Noi and a part of Dong Da, Hoang Mai, Thanh Xuan, and Tay Ho districts are supposed to be flooded when over 120mm of rainfall is recorded.

The local authorities also built Lien Mac sewer and dredged the To Lich and Nhue rivers in an effort to tackle serious flooding in the west region.

In addition, the city will have additional 25 lakes by 2020. The Chairman was convinced that the new lakes would reduce flooding during heavy rains in the city.

About 128 lakes within the city were also dredged./.
