HN, Singapore beef up trade and investment cooperation

VGP – Chairman of Ha Noi municipal People’s Committee Nguyen Duc Chung hosted a reception for a Singaporean high-ranking business delegation led by Chairman of the Singapore Business Federation (SBF) Teo Siong Seng to discuss on ways to boost bilateral cooperation between Singapore and Ha Noi on July 16 in Ha Noi.

Chairman Chung took the occasion to brief the guests about the local socio-economic development. Accordingly, Ha Noi houses over 8 million residents. ‘

Each year, the city welcomed about 24.5 million of domestic and foreign visitors including 6.5 million of foreign ones. 

Over the past ten years, GDP yearly grew 7.41% and average GDP per capita hit US$ 5,200. 

Besides economic growth, Ha Noi regularly attaches importance to social security policies especially pro-poor policies. So far, the local poverty rate felt to only 1.16%. The city targets to totally terminate poverty by late 2019. 

Chairman Chung reported that the city is focusing on three breakthroughs including transport infrastructure development; building e-government for smart city building; and high-quality power training. Especially, by 2015, Ha Noi will have about 300,000 IT engineers to meet with new requirements. 

However, the city is coping with a series of problems such as water and air pollution, traffic congestion, and fire protection, said Chairman Chung. He went on to say that Ha Noi hopes to work with foreign enterprises including Singaporean ones to deal with the aforesaid issues. 

Chairman Chung stressed that Ha Noi always attaches great importance in regards to their cooperation with Singaporean enterprises and the city encourages Singaporean investors to participate in Viet Nam’s start-up ecosystem, building a smart city, promoting tourism development, and building commercial centre.

The Singaporean side said that the areas mentioned by Chung are in-fact strengths of Singaporean enterprises, particularly infrastructure, logistics, transport, services, health, and human resources training.

SBF Chairman said that via the visit, Singaporean enterprises wish to seek cooperation opportunities and assist local enterprises in expanding business ventures, contributing to promoting the strategic partnership between Viet Nam and Singapore.

He expressed his hope that the Hanoi leader would visit Singapore this September on the occasion of the Formula 1 race in Singapore to share experience for the organization of the event in Hanoi scheduled for 2020./.
