Hanoi seeks US$5 billion to upgrade city drainage

VGP - The capital city plans to spend more than VND 116 trillion ( US$5.5 billion) for upgrading its urban drainage system in a massive project set to be completed in 2030, according to Nguyen Van Khoi, Vice Chairman of Hanoi People's Committee.

The plan aims to minimize surface water pollution and areas prone to flooding by 2015, with priority given to the inner city and the outlying districts of Long Bien and Ha Dong.
Work will be carried out to upgrade the sewerage system in Hoan Kiem, Ba Dinh, Dong Da and Hai Ba Trung districts to accommodate rainfall of up to 155 mm of rainfall per day.
Larger lakes that are able to accommodate large inflows of rainwater will be renovated. Meanwhile sewage pumping stations at Yen So, Bay Mau, Kim Lien and Truc Bach areas with capacity of 220,000 cu.m per day will be upgraded to ensure waste water from inner districts meet environment standards before being discharged into the Hong (Red) River.
For the 2016-2020 period, a comprehensive drainage system will be built for the southern Hong River and Nhue River region to handle rainfall of 155 mm per day.
