Ha Noi’s retail sales, service revenue up 13.8% in January 2021

VGP – Ha Noi’s total goods retail sales and consumer service revenue in the first month of 2021 reached VND55.1 trillion (US$2.38 billion), up 4.8% over the previous month and representing a year-on-year increase of 13.8%.

Specifically, the city’s goods retail sales stood at VND35.5 trillion (US$1.53 billion), rising by 6.1% compared to December 20 and up 15.6% over the same period last year, with sales of food and foodstuff growing 8.7% and 27.1%; home appliances increasing by 4.2% and 20.7%; apparels up 7.3% and 20%; and wood and construction materials growing 2.2% and 16.9%.

The increase in retail sales was attributed to a surging shopping demand on the occasion of the Lunar New Year (Tet).  

Ha Noi’s accommodation and restaurant revenue in January totalled VND5.21 trillion (US$225.42 million), up 2.3% and 10%, while tourism revenue stood at VND470 billion (US$20.33 million), up 1.3% and down 45.6%. The capital earned VND13.9 trillion (US$601.5 million) from other services, up 2.6% and 14.9%.

According to the municipal People’s Committee, to meet the consumption needs of local citizens during Tet, businesses have designed plans to produce and store goods with an average growth rate of from 7% to 22% compared to the 2020 Tet occasion. 

The total value of additional goods reserves in the city’s distribution and retail system to serve the market before, during and after the Tet holiday is estimated at VND39.4 trillion (US$1.7 billion), up 5% compared to the storage plan for Tet 2020. 

Ha Noi has been implementing 40 major programmes and events, such as Tet fairs, Tet commodity weeks, bringing goods of stabilized prices to residential areas, Tet markets at weekends, and Tet markets in districts. 

The city has also encouraged businesses to organize 100 mobile sales trips to suburban areas, industrial parks and export processing zones, while organizing the sales of Tet products at 25 trade centers, 142 supermarkets, 455 markets, over 1,800 convenience stores, food and foodstuff chains, and household businesses across the city.

In addition, the city has organized promotional programs and farm produce and foodstuff fairs, and coordinated with districts and towns to organize spring flower markets to serve Tet demands, with security, order, traffic safety and environmental hygiene ensured./.
