Ha Noi’s CPI increases slightly in August

VGP – Ha Noi’s consumer price index (CPI) in August rose by 2.5% compared to the same period last year, but saw a slight decline of 0.19% from December 2019, according to the city’s Statistics Office.

The average CPI of the capital in the first eight months of 2020 registered a year-on-year rise of 3.39%.

August saw seven out of 11 commodity groups report price increases from the previous month, with the groups of housing, electricity, water, fuel and construction materials representing the largest rise of 0.86%. 

The hike is mainly attributed to the prolonged hot weather in the northern region that triggered the prices of electricity, water, kerosene and gas to surge by 3.47%, 5.84%, 1.96% and 0.63%, respectively.

Prices of food and catering services rose by 0.19% due to the outbreak of COVID-19 in early August causing a growing demand for food and foodstuff. 

The transport category also saw a month-on-month increase of 0.17% in prices as the prices of petrol and oil went up 0.42% against July.

Price rises were also seen in the group of goods and other services (up 0.14%), the group of medicine and medical services (up 0.04%), and the education group (up 0.02%).

Meanwhile, three out of the 11 commodity groups reported a decrease in prices, including household equipment and devices (down 0.04%); post and telecommunication (down 0.07%), and culture, entertainment and tourism (down 0.16%).

In August, the gold price moved up 8.9% month-on-month, 33.18% year-on-year and 30.66% from December 2019. The average gold price between January-August rose by 25.61% over the same period last year.

Meanwhile, the price of US dollar went down by 0.07% from the previous month and 0.02% from the same period in 2019, but rose by 0.13% compared to December 2019. Regarding the eight-month period, the average price of US dollar climbed by 0.24% year-on-year./.
