VGP – The gender ratio at birth in Ha Noi is continuing to be uneven, leading to possible risks in labor and social vices in the future.

The local population exceeded 7.6 million in 2017, accounting for 8% of the national population scale. Ha Noi has the second largest population in Viet Nam. The population yearly increases with about 200,000 newborns.

Last year, the city had 117,078 newborns.

In the first half of 2018, the unbalanced sex ratio at birth was 113.2 boys per 100 girls. The rate remained highly in comparison with the national average rate. The gender imbalance at birth may cause gender inequality, labor shortage in some specialized trades, and possible risks of social vices including prostitution and human trafficking

Gender balance is of great significance, stressed Deputy Director of Ha Noi Health Department.

In the coming time, the city would continue to supervise sex selection.

The city will strive for reasonable birth rate so that by 2020 the city will have a population scale of 8.5 million./.
