VGP – The Fund for the Prevention of Tobacco Harms, the Steering Committee on prevention and control of tobacco harms, the Ha Noi Department of Health jointly held a meeting in response to the World No Tobacco Day.

Addressing the event, Director of the Ha Noi Health Department Nguyen Khac Hien said that tobacco consumption may cause 25 types of cancer. Over 90% of lung caners relate to tobacco. Tobacco-related diseases yearly lead to nearly 6 million deaths, including 5 million cases in medium and low-income countries. Without timely preventive measures, in the 21st century, the number of deaths would increase to 1 million due to tobacco use.
To mobilize the engagement of the community, the World Health Organization (WHO) selected May 31 as the World No Tobacco Day. In 2019, the WHO chooses the theme “Tobacco and lung diseases.”
The Ministry of Health and the Ha Noi municipal People’s Committee issued a plan on tobacco prevention in the 2019-2020 period.
The city targets to maintain and expand the modal of “Non-smoke environment” at restaurants, hotels, schools, hospitals; build “Non-smoke tourism points,” and pilot “Non-smoke medical establishments./.”
