The delegates discussed necessary measures to protect the ecosystem of Hanoi’s lakes in the context of urbanization and climate change.

They also exchanged experience in the restoration and protection of Balaton Lake (Hungary), Han River (the Republic of Korea) and Tahoe Lake (the US).

Hanoi’s lakes are now suffering from massive pollution due to poor awareness of the relations between the health of lakes and people, according to the recent report published by the Vietnam Center for Environment and Community Research (CECR).

In a bid to address the problem, the center launched a website at the address www.cecr.vn with an aim to develop a network that connects people to preserve and protect the lakes and to support information sharing among environmental pundits, authorities, businesses and communities.

Recently, CECR also coordinated with the US Embassy in Hanoi and 100 volunteers to tidy up Ngoc Khanh Lake.
CECR Director  Nguyen Ngoc Ly said Hanoi can only achieved sustainable development if environmental problems are effectively settled. The restoration of the lakes becomes an important index but it requires synchronous measures.

Currently, the city houses tens of lakes, of which, the famous ones include Hoan Kiem Lake, West Lake. Most of the lakes are situated in Dong Da, Hoang Mai, Ba Dinh and Hai Ba Trung districts./.
