VGP - Nearly 1,000 people joined the so-called Immortal Regiment procession in Ha Noi on May 8 to mark the 73rd anniversary of the victory of Russia’s Great Patriotic War (May 9, 1945-2017).
The event, held by the Russian Embassy in Ha Noi, also marked the 43rd anniversary of southern liberation and national reunification (April 30, 1975-2018) and the 64th anniversary of Dien Bien Phu Victory (May 7, 1954-2018).
The event aims to educate Vietnamese youth about the nation’s tradition and the noble international spirit, as well as the close ties between Viet Nam and Russia; maintain and promote the values brought by the Great Patriotic War Victory.
Participants included Vietnamese war veterans and students along with representatives from the embassies of Commonwealth of Independent States countries.
At the ceremony, Russian Ambassador to Viet Nam Konstantin Vnukov said the term “Immortal Regiment” was coined in a similar procession in Russia’s Tomsk city in 2012. The procession since then was held annually in many parts of the world, he added.
The diplomat said he expects the activity will become an annual event that spreads through localities of Viet Nam.
The progamme highlighted historical milestones of the Great Patriotic War from 1941 to the victory day on May 9th, 1945 through stories of Russian war veterans. The sacred war lasted 1,418 days and nights with thousands of fierce battles involving millions of Russian and European people.
